Target Audience: English subject leaders, teachers and TAs interested in finding some ways to support the closing of the gender gap in writing

This half day course focuses on the reasons why boys are turned off writing, explores barriers to learning for boys and looks at ideas for engaging boys in writing more fully, leading to improved outcomes.

An afternoon session delivered by Mark Townsend, focusing on the above points during the first half, and an opportunity to work collaboratively using some practical ideas in the classroom during the second half.

Objectives:
• To explore the barriers to learning for boys, including writing
• To gain an understanding of why boys are often turned off writing
• To explore accessing reading for boys
• To explore approaches to teaching and learning writing which engage and enthuse boys in the primary classroom.
