Confidence in Calculation for teachers in Year 5 and Year 6: 2019-2020

Course date: 4half days across the year, starting in October 2019

Course venue: Bristol Primary School (venue TBC)

£495 for two teachers and £275 for one

The Sutton Trust report ‘What Makes Great Teaching’ identifies teachers’ content knowledge, including their ability to understand how students think about a subject and identify common misconceptions, as one of the two factors with the strongest evidence of improving pupil attainment. This course aims to develop exactly this kind of knowledge.

Written in response to the feedback from teachers working in Year 5 and Year 6, we have written a new programme designed specifically for teachers working in upper KS2. Each session will look at a different aspect of mathematics in depth woven through some key themes –

  • The 4 operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division;
  • Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio;
  • ‘Going deeper’ and understanding challenge and differentiation within a mastery model;
  • Application, language and reasoning;
  • geometry and statistics;
  • Getting ready for end of key stage assessments

Where relevant we will reference the National Curriculum and mastery approaches to teaching maths, though our primary aim is to develop great teaching and learning in calculation and an understanding of the deep subject and pedagogical knowledge needed to teach effectively and for children to learn effectively in upper KS2.

The cost includes:

  • Five half days of CPD; during the final day we will plan for maths development back in school the following year.
  • Access to all the resources used on the programme which should support further professional development in school.
  • Teachers returning to school full of ideas, knowledge and enthusiasm!

Dates: all sessions are half days, Tuesday afternoons from 1.15pm – 4.15pm at a Bristol Primary School (TBC)  Delegates are welcome to arrive from 12.30pm if they wish to eat their lunch with us.

  • Session 1: Tuesday 22nd October 2019
  • Session 2: Tuesday 26th November 2019
  • Session 3: Tuesday 4th February 2020
  • Session 4: Tuesday 24th March 2020

Delegate feedback from our Confidence in Calculation programmes:

“The most valuable course I have been on. Has made a real impact on my teaching, and therefore the children/school”

“Intellectually stimulating and highly supportive. An inspiration.”

The course is designed for a pair of teachers from your school – this will achieve the greatest impact on practice across upper KS2.  However, we will also accept bookings from one teacher from a school.

Total cost for the pair of teachers to attend all sessions: £495, or for one teacher attending: £275
