Continuing Professional and Leadership Development
The Bristol Primary Teaching School Alliance aims to offer training and development that addresses the most significant areas of teaching and learning, leadership and subject specific development. Some courses offer longer programmes of continuing support whilst others offer the option of short courses. We are able to respond quickly to local and national priorities and are able to use the expertise of our SLEs and partner school leaders to support with a wide range of school improvement needs.
Our CPLD – Continuing Professional and Leadership Development, is built on the Sutton Trust’s report, ‘What Makes Great Teaching’ (2013) which reviews over 200 pieces of research to identify the elements of teaching that have the strongest evidence of improving attainment.
The two elements that have the greatest impact are:
- A teacher’s content knowledge and understanding of how children think about a subject and their common misconceptions.
- The quality of instruction including use of questioning and assessment practices
Our CPLD focuses clearly on these two areas. We have also responded to the curriculum requirements of the new Ofsted Education Inspection Framework which came into use in September 2019.
We have developed a suite of programmes to ensure teachers and school leaders have both strong subject knowledge, but also have effective pedagogy in the classroom and are therefore able to understand gaps in understanding and through high quality dialogue know how to close those gaps and challenge every children in the class to achieve. Our leadership programmes offer models for delegates to lead, challenge and support effectively, in order to raise standards and improve the quality of teaching in their schools.
As an accredited NPQ provider, career development, through a nationally recognised leadership programme is also supported, whether moving from initial teacher training to the NQT year or from middle to senior leadership, right up to headship. Details of the NPQML, NPQSL and NPQH can be found by viewing ‘all courses’.
Our programmes can be found by viewing courses and events menu at the top of our website pages.
